Going to the eye doctor is an experience that we can prepare children for ahead of time, especially if they are anxious about medical appointments or have sensory issues.

The NECO optometrists at Martha Eliot Health Center, one of our partner sites, have developed social stories for kids in English and Spanish, to equip children to know what to expect when they go to the eye doctor, or when they get their first pair of glasses, or when they start using a patch to treat amblyopia (when one eye is weaker than the other).

In addition, the Picture Communication System (PCS) has been included into the social stories to help children who use communication devices to communicate. This grant project led by Dr. Jennifer Reilly was born out of Dr. Amy Moy’s experience with her daughter who has Down syndrome and uses a communication device herself.
